Thor: Ragnarok Review - Oh My Thor!

Thor: Ragnarok is an imperfect film, balancing with some big ideas. The biggest flaw is director Taika Waititi’s film is its runtime. Being Indian, we are subject and ready for 3 hour long films. But here, even 2 hours and 10 minutes is a bit stretchy for a film heavy on laughter but not so much on content. What the director, actor Chris Hemsworth, villain Cate Blanchett and Marvel Studios do not get is that rip-roaring comedies have lost their charm and most of us get our laughs in the form of satire or subtlety. So, the lines from Thor are loud but will make you laugh sporadically. I walked into a 7:30 P.M. show on a Sunday. 4 star ratings had been filling up my screen, so no doubt!
Expectations ran very high for this one.
Yet, Thor: Ragnarok never truly comes to life until the introduction of Mark Ruffalo’s character, The Incredible Hulk. Which is sad because most of the heavy lifting is done by leading man Chris Hemsworth and the supporting actor in the form of Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s brother, Loki. The two of them have to fight after their father’s death, their sister, Hela. She is played by an over-dramatic, over-the-top, trying-too-hard-to-fit-in Cate Blanchett. In my opinion, it is Blanchett who derails thefilm, completely.
She starts off strong and aided with fantastic VFX, she gives a charismatic performance. But slowly, as Thor: Ragnarok proceeds, her character along with the story starts to get more and more absurd. Loophole after loophole appears, but one thing keeps it going. Its leading man, Chris Hemsworth. His comedic timing takes the rip-roaring comedy that has now gone to hell and revives it in such a fresh and type of way that he forces you to laugh, not with him but at him and his foolishness.
This one is a rather short review, but go watch Thor: Ragnarok for a fantastic time in theatres. Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston is another plus point in it and while I’m not such an avid Marvel fan that I could actively spot so many Easter eggs, a lot of eagle eyed viewers will be able to spot plenty! I’m sure of it! Go and watch Thor and have a good time that will not be flawless, will get rather bumpy and will be a bit hard to sit through.
But it’s fun, a word that has lacked MOST of my reviews this year. I’m also going to add onto that craze for ‘Thor’ and go with 3.5 out of 5 for one of the best superhero movies in a long time. What I’m more excited for is how this sets the stage for Justice League. Catch my review on that along with Tumhari Sulu on November 17th! See you, stay tuned!
